Cattleman’s Days—Gunnison County Fair 2024

We were really looking forward to traveling to Gunnison for the fair this year.

The repairs on the canyon were supposed to be just about completed so we thought we would have a beautiful trip. (The construction there last year significantly lengthened our journey!)

But then because of the crack found in the Middle Bridge on the way between Montrose and Gunnison a few months ago, Highway 50 was closed.

One of our families that bought two goats from us had all ready picked them up before the closure. Unfortunately, the other family ended up going all the way around to pick up their two goats—making it a 6 hour trip instead of 2 1/2 hours!

That’s pure devotion there!

Luckily, by the time of the fair, the authorities had one lane open on the Middle Bridge, so we were able to go through on the way up. We did have to return through Crested Butte and over Kebler Pass because that lane was open only during short windows of time.

Abigail and Tristan

Tristan and Abigail—being seasoned goat-showing people after three years—did a great job.

Here is Tristan taking second place (the red ribbon) with his wether Nick.

Abigail did just as well with her doe. Here she is with Henrietta before going into the show ring. You can tell they were quite fond of each other!

Following the show and the 4-H Auction, Abby was notified that her market goat Henrietta had taken first place over all in the carcass contest. Congratulations to Abby on a job well done.

Madison was new to the goat showing this year, but you can see she is doing a super job. Looks to us as if Madison is a natural born showman!

Here she is in the ring with her goat Cornelia. (We called the goat Bermuda because her Mom’s name is Island, but we love the name that Madison chose for her too.)

Madison and Cornelia took 3rd place in their market goat class. The good news is that Madison gets to keep Cornelia! Way to go Madison.

Gabriel has shown goats before so he certainly knows his way around the show ring. Here he is showing Heath.

Gabriel and Tristan and their wethers Nick and Heath competed together in this market goat class, as the two wethers were twin goats born on our ranch.

We were really pleased to see both of them take first and second place in this market goat class.

Both young men and their wethers returned for the Market Goat Championship class with Gabriel and Heath coming out as Reserve Grand Champion.

It’s always so fun to go to Gunnison. We love the area and the people and so enjoy our two families that have been customers for several years now.

Such a joy to see these young people growing up into fine adults! We look forward to seeing everyone again next year.
